800 SF Accessible ADU in Oakland
When the homeowners' parents decided to move from the Central Valley to be closer to their grandchildren, the family needed a living solution that offered genuine independence — not a converted den. This 800-square-foot detached ADU in Oakland's Laurel district was designed specifically for aging-in-place: all on one level, with accessibility features built into the architecture rather than retrofitted as afterthoughts.
A standard backyard design wouldn't meet accessibility needs
The homeowners originally explored converting their detached garage, but the existing structure had a sunken slab, a narrow door opening, and no direct accessible path from the street. After reviewing options, a new ground-up structure on the rear portion of the lot made more sense — it could be designed from scratch with the right grades, thresholds, and room dimensions to support comfortable aging in place.

All thresholds are flush. Door clear openings are 36 inches throughout, with a 60-inch turning diameter at the bathroom, bedroom, and entry. These aren't modifications — they're the baseline the plan was drawn to.
The walk-in shower replaces the tub entirely and includes a fold-down bench, offset drain, and a curbless entry with a linear drain channel. Blocking is installed in all bathroom walls for future grab bar placement without needing to open walls.
A covered walkway from the main house connects at grade, sheltered from rain — a small detail that makes daily visits comfortable and safe year-round.

Independent living for the whole family — on the same lot
The ADU gives the homeowners' parents a fully private home with their own address, front door, and outdoor space, while keeping them a 30-second walk from their grandchildren. It's multigenerational living done with intention.

Multigenerational living with long-term flexibility
Designed for aging in place today, the ADU converts easily to a standard rental when circumstances change. Accessibility features — particularly curbless showers and wide doorways — are increasingly valued by all renters, not just those with mobility needs.
